The story behind my new single 'Whisper' out 14 October

I wrote the foundations of this song on my old Roland keyboard in my tiny barely-a-studio apartment in Paris back in 2015. I moved to London in the Autumn of that year to enroll in the Popular Music Masters program at Goldsmiths. As part of a pop composition class I developed the song further. Springing from a constant feeling, and reality, of being silenced and objectified as a woman on countless occasions, especially as a woman making music, I started writing the lyrics and wanted them to reflect the burning need to call out this bullshit treatment that’s been taken as a given for so long (something on par with the detestable statement ”boys will be boys”). I wanted the song to inspire women, and any other group that’s treated like second-class citizens for that matter, to raise our voices. When I submitted the first master of this song to the Goldsmiths Mixtape it got selected (Woaaaahh I was so excited that my song had been chosen!!). However, ironically when it came out whoever had put the mixtape together had completely manipulated my vocals to the point where they were barely recognisable as mine anymore. This had been done without my knowledge or consent. Again, I felt like someone had taken something from me without permission and pushed their own idea of what I should sound like and who I should be as an artist.

So fast forward to present-day 2022, I am finally ready to share this story and release this song under MY TERMS. I had the pleasure of working with my treasured friend and collaborator Amanda Mayo on this version of Whisper, co-produced, remixed and remastered by her. Hope you enjoy the song and that it resonates with you in some way.

Much love,

Charlotte
